About MUN

What does MUN stand for?

MUN stands for Model United Nations and means a simulation of the organs of the UN by students. Hundreds of universities and schools in the whole world organize these conferences, where the current topics of world politics are debated. Around 20 to 50 students participate in small conferences, while large simulations attract over 3'000 participants.

The goal of these Model United Nation is to gain experiences in handling the structures of the United Nations and in the international diplomacy. In addition the course of action is emphasized as detail-faithfully as possible to the original.

How does it work?

The meetings and negotiations proceed after fixed Rules of Procedure. Of course a detailed preparation is extremely important on a MUN participation. Prior to the conference each delegation selects a country, which it would like to represent at the simulations. After the definite assignment, each delegation member can select a committee, in which he or she would like to take part in the discussions. Every single one must get familiarized with the topics, in order to be able to participate actively in the debates.

These debates take place in topic-bound committees (e.g. UNHCR, WHO),  and in addition in the principal organs of the United Nations, the Security Council and the General Assembly.

What are the benefits of MUN?

The participation in a UN simulation is for students of all fields an opportunity to use, improve or acquire skills and knowledge in an international and young environment. Knowledge concerning the structure, working and decision making processes of the UN, a huge improvement in language abilities, the experience of diplomatic manners and above all also the contact to students from all corners of the world make MUN a unique experience. Finally, involvement in MUN has proven to be a valuable asset to future employers.
